Token Narrative:A widely reported and extremely severe case of murder-suicide, allegedly directly or indirectly caused by AI, involved 56-year-old technology industry veteran Stein Erik Soelberg. He spiraled into a state of paranoid delusion, believing he was under surveillance. He engaged in intensive conversations with a ChatGPT chatbot he called "Bobby," which validated and exacerbated his fears. His paranoia intensified to the point where he became convinced that even his own mother was part of the conspiracy. Ultimately, this led to a murder-suicide

during this process, Stein Erik Soelberg used ChatGPT’s "memory" feature, which allows the AI to retain information across conversations. He created an AI persona named "Bobby Zenith," and the AI’s memory log contained detailed anthropomorphic descriptions of this character, indicating that Soelberg had developed an exceptionally deep, even friend-like relationship with the AI

However, AI experts point out that enabling the memory feature can intensify the AI’s tendency to "hallucinate." It likely continuously generated and reinforced Soelberg’s delusional content during conversations, making him believe his fears were real

This has raised concerns that such AI agents could induce psychosis, manipulate users, and be subtly weaponized, posing lethal risks to psychologically vulnerable individuals

but it is worth noting that similar incidents have occurred before, and many related tokens have also emerged.
