It’s been a while since I’ve seen a Korean builder share something that truly resonates with me as a researcher.

As someone who often gets asked to advise on tokenomics design during research work—or even receives direct requests to help with it—I always find myself coming back to the same question:

“Did Bitcoin succeed because it had a meticulously crafted tokenomics design?”

Of course, Bitcoin is an exception in every debate, so let’s set it aside. Even then, I can’t think of a single project with a highly complex, math-heavy tokenomics model that actually succeeded because of that model.

On the other hand, projects like $BONK or $DOGE, which have much simpler models, seem to succeed by capturing value from other aspects of the market—not because of tokenomics.

After years of research, the conclusion I keep arriving at is this: instead of spending all that time trying to fine-tune tokenomics, it’s far more productive to ask “How can I make my product more useful, even just a little bit?”

I’ve never had the chance to meet @delabs_james in person, but if the opportunity ever comes, I’d love to sit down and exchange thoughts with him.

BTW Did @delabsOfficial really launch and experiment with various games before releasing their token? Or is it just a narrative they’re trying to fit after the fact?

If it’s the former, then it seems like Delabs is taking a very deliberate and cautious approach.

Highly recommend this 1 minute video. It nails today’s tokenomics problem.

@delabs_james calls it ROTS (return on token spend). If a token’s utility doesn’t bring in at least as much revenue as it emits, then you're basically doomed. No amount of sinks or locks will save it.

Some notable examples:
- @berachain: PoL tied security to LPs, but a yield-chasing flywheel reversed: front-loaded emissions + liquidity exodus roundtripped $BERA from $9 to <$1.7
- @CurveFinance: veCRV locked >50% of supply and aligned LPs with fees, yet CRV still tracks protocol revenue
- @AerodromeFi: ve(3,3) on @base bootstrapped >$1b TVL in weeks; now emissions outrun organic volume
- @boopdotfun: pulled the entire playbook from fee-sharing, airdrops, KOL bounties, to cult leaderboards, yet activity fell 90% in a week.

Tokenomics aren’t useless, just overrated. Solid product with vanilla tokenomics beats a weak product with a complex one. Build something people will pay for, find pmf, then share the value with them.
